Speaking
First impressions are important. Your speaking is one of the first things that people notice when they meet you. Most of my students want to gain confidence in speaking, pronunciation and communication skills, it’s a priority for them, so I focus mainly on this as well as conversational skills. We learn to speak by speaking. Many of the messages sent in face-to-face communication are sent, not so much through the words used as through stress, intonation, pitch, tone of voice, etc.
So I focus on features of pronunciation such as connected speech, relaxed pronunciation, reductions, how words and sentences are stressed and how the rising and falling of your voice can make you sound more interesting. I use specific techniques to improve your pronunciation, look at the phrases native English speakers are using and focus on functional language – language you can use in the real world to help you communicate a clear message.
Importantly, I want to teach you English that is practical, useful and relevant, that will help you connect with people and to communicate what you want to say.
I will use topics that are of interest to you and look at your learning-style to work out how you can learn best. During your speaking lessons I shall target other aspects of your spoken English, such as vocabulary and grammar.
Here are some of the benefits of learning speaking with me:
- You can talk about topics that are of interest to you.
- We can talk about British culture and the British way of life.
- You will learn new and useful vocabulary
- I will speak clearly and naturally, in a way that is easy for you to understand and follow, at a speed with which you feel comfortable.
- You can speak with me at your own pace and in a way that is comfortable to you.
- I will encourage you to practise words you may find difficult, and not to fear making a mistake.
- I will ask you if you want me to correct you quickly or after you have finished speaking. (It is generally better for me to correct afterwards).
- I can give you helpful tips on how to improve your speaking in your daily life
- I can recommend books, websites and other resources that I think will help you to improve your speaking.
- We can record your voice and send you video and audio-file examples of speaking and pronunciation.
- I work out how you learn as well as what you learn. This helps you to progress and improve quickly.
“I really want to find someone to practise English with me”
I offer pure conversational classes. If you want to talk in English, we can have a conversation in English about things that interest you. You can practise your speaking, pronunciation and listening skills. Its up to you how much you want to speak. You can sit back and listen or talk as much as you want. These classes are at a reduced rate. I will correct you as you speak and you make your own notes.
